The singer/songwriter and rock and roll legend known as Elton John released an autobiography about his journey through music and rise to fame.
The 72-year-old star from Middlesex, England, had a bumpy road through his career and most certainly through life. Born on March 25, 1947, Reginald Kenneth Dwight, better known as Elton John, was musically talented from the very start. John began playing the piano at a very young age and soon after began writing his own songs.
His career was formed in 1962 through an R&B Band called Bluesology that played until 1967. Along with founding the band, he started a longtime friendship with a man named Bernie Taupin. The two of them have been in over 30 albums together and have sold over 300 million records.
John and Tauplin are still best friends to this day and are discussing the idea of releasing another song with each other.
John has received a total of five Grammy awards, a Tony award and various other international awards. He has influenced many artists in his career, most famously the rock and roll band, Queen. Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen, was a longtime friend of Elton’s and helped John through his drug and sexual addictions.
Unfortunately, Mercury died of AIDS on Nov. 24, 1991. Losing one of his closest friends and personal “therapist” scared John, as he feared he would go back to drugs and other harmful things.
“I’ve had a pretty good life if I say so myself, other than my drug and sex addiction that is,” the artist stated in an interview.
Luckily, Elton John later decided to focus on his music so that he would not go back to using drugs and alcohol. After losing a loved one from AIDS, he decided to use his fame for the better and start his very own foundation called “Elton John’s AIDS Foundation.”
One year later, he began hosting his own Academy Awards Party to introduce the new foundation to the world. Besides discussing the issue of this disease, he came out as bisexual and was openly gay to the world seven years later. It soon became one of the highest-profile Oscar parties in Hollywood Film History.
“To all the members of the LGBTQ+ community, don't be afraid to be who you are. There is nothing wrong with going to bed with someone of the same sex as you. It should be completely normal. In the near future I hope it will be normal in every person's eyes. I hope soon that the judgment can stop. The LGBTQ+ community can all live their lives how they want,” John expressed at the 1988 Academy After Party.
The singer entered a civil relationship with David Furnish on Dec. 21, 2005. They married in 2014 after the same-sex marriage law was passed and have been happily married ever since.
John started out as a bar pianist before he became a multi-millionaire singer and songwriter. His life has certainly been hard, but through the trials, his songs were able to resonate more with fans.
“I have had a hard life, but it has only made me stronger, not only as a person, but as a musician,” John said.
He recently debuted his first autobiography titled “Me.” The book tells the story of his life, fame and encounters with other famous rock musicians. John’s story will make you laugh, cry and smile.
