Gear Up for Poolside Reading with These Books Coming Out This Summer

Updated: Sep 10, 2019

With school getting out, we will finally have time to attack our to-be-read piles and read all of the books we have been meaning to get around to for months. Don’t worry about running out of reading options after binge reading everything you have because this coming season has a number of exciting reads that will add to your TBR list.

Coming out just in time for your summer vacay is “These Witches Don’t Burn” by Isabel Sterling. This will be released on May 28 and puts a modern twist on witches living in Salem, Massachusetts. Hannah is an Elemental witch with the power to control fire, earth, water and air. She spends her time avoiding her ex-girlfriend, hanging out with her best friend and working at a crystal and candle shop called the Fly By Night Cauldron.

Blood rituals and dark magic start to appear all over Salem, threatening witches and humans. Forced to team up with her ex, Hannah tests her abilities and attempts to find the witch causing problems in order to save her coven and her town.

Popular contemporary writer Sarah Dessen will be coming out with a new book on June 4. “The Rest of the Story” is about Emma Saylor and her unexpected summer with her mother’s family. Her mother died when she was 10, so the trip to North Lake connects her to her mother and teaches her about her family’s past. Roo, a boy who was her best friend when she was young, helps her connect the pieces of her parent’s past. A new world opens up to her as she gets to know this side of her family, and Saylor finds herself falling in love along the way.

Next on the list for your summer reads comes out on July 16. “The Nickel Boys,” written by Colson Whitehead, covers an important thread of American history. Set in Jim Crow-era Florida, the narrative based off of a true story follows a young black boy who is sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called The Nickel Academy after making an innocent mistake. The Academy is a place of horrors where boys are beaten and sexually abused, but Elwood Curtis tries to hold on to Martin Luther King Jr.’s words, “Throw us in jail and we will still love you.”

Struggling with Elwood’s ideals and his friends skepticism of his naivety, the boy makes a decision that will have consequences lasting for decades. The boys of The Nickel Academy have their lives warped and their fates decided by the grotesque reform school that operated for 111 years.

To recover from “The Nickel Boys,” a fantasy inspired by Mexican folklore comes out less than a month later. “Gods of Jade and Shadow” by Silvia Moreno-Garcia will be released on Aug. 6, and witnesses the dark, life-changing journey of Casiopea Tun. She lives in a small, dusty town in southern Mexico and dreams of going to far away places. After opening a wooden box found in her grandfather’s room, she releases the spirit of the Mayan god of death. She is asked to help him in recovering his throne from his treacherous brother. Failure could end with her demise, and victory could make her dreams come true. The adventure takes her on a cross-country voyage through jungles, cities and the darkness of the Mayan underworld.

Many more books are coming out next season, but these are ones that should definitely be added to your TBR piles. These stories of witches, family ties, American history and Mayan gods are sure to keep you entertained during your summer vacation.
