Why "The Umbrella Academy" Is Netflix's Latest Hit

“The Umbrella Academy” is a Netflix original show based on comics written by Gerard Way (former lead singer of My Chemical Romance) and Gabriel Ba. These are not part of Marvel, but part of the Dark Horse comics. They add a new spin to the classic “These kids have powers and fight bad guys!” cliché by making the theme a lot darker than normal.

The show begins with 43 women around the world all having a child at the same time. None of the women were expecting before the event happened. A millionaire adopted seven of the children, who are the focus of the show.

The children, all of whom have powers, are brought together by the death of their adopted father. They meet at the house they grew up in, and you quickly realize that two of the seven are not present. A gruesome death befell Number Six (Ben), and Number Five got lost in time, as he has the ability to move through time and space. Number one (Luther) has super strength, Number Two (Diego) can manipulate how he throws things to be extremely precise, Number Three (Allison) can control minds with the phrase “I heard a rumor…” , Number Four (Klaus) can see and talk to the dead and Number Seven (Vanya) was raised as an ordinary child.

The show kicks off with Number Five coming back from the future, revealing that the apocalypse is to occur in eight days. The siblings grow closer and eventually discover the truth about their father, including all of the secrets he kept. The ending will shock you and leave you begging for more.

Be prepared to not move from your spot on the couch for a while as this show leaves you on edge and wanting more. The show is part of the drama, action, superhero and science fiction categories. If you are a fan of “Stranger Things” or superhero movies in general, this is a great show to watch.

The series has already been renewed for a second season. That release date has yet to be revealed.
