MJHS Lady Bears Plan to Take Back State This Basketball Season

As the MJHS football season comes to a tragic end, a new sports season begins. For the fans, MJHS’s girls’ (and boys’) basketball season began this past week. For the team, however, preparation for these upcoming games began months ago.

Both teams made it to the state tournament last season, but they fell short of the state championship title. Now, they’re ready for a redemption season, taking only a short break after last year’s seasons before summer practices and games began.

Junior and shooting guard for the Lady Bears Ryleigh Osborne shared her excitement for the next few months: “This season I’m looking forward to showing everybody that even though we started off with setbacks, we aren’t quitting and we are a team that fights.”

These “setbacks” include the absence of one senior and starter, Shelby Petty, who had to move suddenly right before the season started. Another senior and starter, Gentry Houston, was injured in the first practice of the season with a high ankle sprain and torn ligaments. Despite this blow to their confidence, Osborne says the team is staying optimistic.

“We felt that there was no hope for the season with such a small bench, but we have persevered and found our hope in each other through it all,” said Osborne.

Preparing for the new season has been hard work, from intense daily workouts to hours-long practices, but Osborne says that it’s all part of the plan to return to the “Glass House,” which is what the team calls the gym at MTSU where the state tournament and championship games are played.

“We prepare each and every day giving 110 percent,” said Osborne.

So far, the Lady Bear’s record is two and two. The first losses to Stewart’s Creek High School and East Nashville Magnet School (East Lit.) were only by a few points each. However, the team was victorious over both Ravenwood High School and Centennial High School by at least 20 points this past week.

Next Friday, Dec. 7, both the girls’ and boys’ teams will play in their first home district game, taking on county rival Lebanon High School.
