Are AirPods Worth the Money?

Unlike most devices on the market, Apple AirPod sales have continued to grow since their release in late 2016. At times, Apple even struggles with the demand and gets stuck on back-order.

What are AirPods? They are the newer and ingenuitive twist on earbuds created by Apple. They were introduced to the market on Sept. 7, 2016 along with the iPhone 7. But they weren’t available online or in most stores until Dec. 13, 2016.

The devices are wireless and bluetooth. So, you can connect them to your device, as long as the device is an iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad or Mac computer.

The AirPods themselves are stated to have around five hours of listening time within one charge. When the charging case is fully charged, it can add an additional 24 hours of listening time, which is a huge breakthrough for a device this small.

The headphones have sensors built into them, which enables them to start playing your music whenever they are inserted in your ears, as well as pause your music when you take them out.

They also have a built in microphone, so you can make phone calls and use Siri as needed.

Apple states the new and advanced features AirPods come from the Apple W1 chip, which allows the device to have these functions.

“The result is completely magical,” says Apple’s website about their AirPods. Do the buyers think so?

After being out for almost two years, there are some controversies about the earbuds, specifically the cost. The price of AirPods is $159.00.

As cool and cutting-edge as AirPods may seem, they have their fair share of cons. Due to their size, the AirPods are easy to lose or misplace.

“I lost one of my mine, so that kind of stinks,” says an anonymous Mount Juliet freshman.

Additionally, unlike regular earbuds with cords and wires, you have to remember to charge them for on the go use.

“I like AirPods because I hate not being able to charge my phone while listening to music,” said junior Dina Eskander.

Unfortunately, if you have an iPhone newer than the six, you have to either buy a “Lighting to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack,” known as a “dongle,” for $9.00 with earbuds of your choice, or AirPods to be able to listen to music.

It really comes down to personal preference. Yes, $159.00 is a lot for earbuds, but they do have many features that might make listening to music easier- as long as you have a good enough memory to charge them and keep track of where you set them down.

No matter how you listen to music, stay sharp and keep playing that beat.
