Everyone is born with a gift, a special talent that helps define who they are from others. For some, it’s sports. For others, it’s singing. These two gifts get a lot of attention. This is because of our culture.
We will sit for hours and watch grown men try to hit a ball with a wooden stick or pay hundreds of dollars to see our favorite singers in real life. Most of the time, we (as journalists) write about things that are going on in the world, but I want to break that mold. I have collected eight quotes that make me smile or got me through hard times. Let’s put the spotlight on someone else for a change.
“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time”. - Thomas Edison
For those who have a hard time when they don’t get something right, this is for you. A former president is telling you to try again. No matter how many times you fail, you should always get back up. “Fall seven times, get up eight.”
“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” – Oscar Wilde
Life is hard. We are all put into this world and expected to do what we are told. The people that follow the rules never look to the stars. The people who break the mold and follow their dreams are looking to the stars. Always be the person looking at the stars.
“Life always offers you a second chance. It’s called tomorrow.” - unknown
This is one of my personal favorite quotes. It reminds you that it’s ok to make mistakes. You can fix it tomorrow and make sure it never happens again. Make tomorrow better than today.
“One of the happiest moments in life is when you find the courage to let go of what you can’t change.” - Unknown
This is hard for so many people to do, especially after the death of a loved one. When someone close to you dies, it takes so long for you to come to terms that it’s ok. They are in a better place now. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you can be happy again.
“Let no man pull you low enough to hate him,” - Martin Luther King Jr.
This quote is coming from the leader of the Civil Rights Movement. He was killed because someone hated him for the brilliance of his mind and the color of his skin. If he tells you not to hate people, you might want to listen. He had so many reasons to hate people, but never once did he let that hate take over. He is the best kind of role model.
“Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die” - Buddha
Holding onto anger will do no good in the end. If you continue to hold onto anger, you’ll never move on from it. It will take over your life. Don’t let anger control you.
“Worrying means you suffer twice.” - Newt Scamander (jk rowling)
Stop worrying about the worst possible outcome of a situation. Think positive and trust that the situation will go as planned. Worrying ahead of time will do you no good.
“Be a fruit loop in a world full of cheerios” - unknown
In our society, we are told what to wear, how to act, who to love and who to be. While everyone else conforms to the rules, break the mold. Be yourself, no matter who that is. If people get mad at you, know that they are jealous of the confidence you have to be yourself.
With so much going on in our lives and world, it’s nice to have little reminders to stay positive. It’s not always easy to do for anyone anymore. Every once in a while, we need to take a step back and enjoy the little things in life, like your weird cat who likes to sleep in the cabinet or your neighbor’s dog that always greets you in the morning. We are so blinded by all of the bad in the world that we forget about the good. Take time this summer focusing on the good of life. It will help.
