Young girls need powerful role models. These girls may not always have people to look up to in their lives, but they can turn to books. Young adult novels are filled with female characters that can empower girls all over. Recently published and upcoming books have especially showcased the power of women.
The first series that comes to mind when I think of powerful female characters is the Throne of Glass series. Aelin Galathynius, the main protagonist of the series, is one of the most empowering women that I have ever read about.
She starts as the most well known and most dangerous assassin in her city. Later on, you find out she is secretly the queen of a struggling kingdom. Aelin uses her strengths to defeat all kinds of problems. She is such a strong, unique character that many girls can look to for inspiration.
Aelin is not the only influential female in the series. Elide Lochan is a commanding character that doesn’t let her disability get in her way. No matter the problem, Elide fights just as well as her peers, if not better, even though she has a disfigured ankle. She, as well as the character Lysandra, can show girls that you can overcome anything. The seventh and final edition to the series will be published this fall.
Reader Erin Dowling claimed, “Characters like this motivate me. They let me get an idea who I can really be.”
Another series where the main female character is so influential is Shatter Me. The newest book in the series just came out in March of this year. Throughout the series, Juliette Ferrars grows to be an unstoppable force. She gets over her fears and takes back her life. Juliette, in my opinion, is the definition of character development.
“By the end of the last book, she is crazy powerful. The epitome of empowering,” avid reader Sabrina Austin adds.
Girls can relate to Juliette on many levels. She begins as someone who doesn’t stand up for herself. This is an aspect that girls can learn from. They can connect with her and understand the importance of taking control of your life and standing up for yourself.
Coming out later this year is Two Dark Reigns. The first novel in the series, Three Dark Crowns, introduced the three fierce females that the series surrounds. Arsinoe, Mirabella, and Katharine are triplets born to kill each other. There must be one remaining sister, for she will be the sole queen. Each character possesses her own unique characteristics and each one is unstoppable.
Even more YA novels with fierce female characters are Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, Caraval by Stephanie Garber, anything written by Marie Lu, and The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. With novels like these that contain women that continue to inspire, girls all over are bound to be empowered and to rise up be who they really are.
