Ladies, this is a man’s world. Men are higher paid, more respected and seem to have it so much easier than we women do; however, what if I told you it doesn’t have to be this way? Feminism is your answer. Feminism is defined as the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of equality of the sexes, and I am here to inform you as to why I believe that we should all be feminists.
First of all, women are conditioned in today’s society to sit down and be quiet unless we are cooking or cleaning up after the men. We are frowned upon if ever we decide to play a “boy sport” such as football. We are told that the sports, if any, that we play must be feminine and attractive, such as volleyball. We have been told that we can’t be mechanics or firefighters because “that’s a man’s job.” Well, I personally am sick and tired of sitting around looking pretty instead of curing cancer, replacing my transmission filter or playing football professionally. If a woman is capable of doing the exact same tasks as a man, why not let her?
Second, much of our oppression comes from the male’s inability to control himself. For example, high school dress codes. Some dress codes enforce horribly sexist rules on girls such as no leggings allowed. This is sexist because it is considered distracting to the male students for a female student to wear the comfortable bottoms. Another example of this sexism in schools is the fact that we are not allowed to wear shirts that showcase our shoulders due to, again the boy’s distraction, and the fact that male education is prioritized like this is mortifying. How long will it be until they remove us women from schools all together? I and many others believe that a young girl’s education is just as important as a boy’s.
It is imperative that we find a way to fight the misogynistic world that we live in. We should be teaching young girls about feminism and making them aware that just because they are female does not mean that they cannot achieve their dreams. We should be teaching feminism to boys and girls alike.
Ladies, we as strong, beautiful, independent, worthy and just all around wonderful females can take down hate and just about anything else we put our minds to. Just because we are women does not mean that we do not deserve respect. So get out there and conquer the world!
